Millionaires aren’t what you see depicted in Hollywood movies or reality television. Most millionaires are everyday people. They can range in income level from teachers to corporate executives. However, millionaires have one thing in common: They budget. They create a gap between their earnings & spending and they put savings first. Because even small amounts of money, when invested, become large amounts of money over time.
You may be surprised at the thought that a millionaire needs a budget. But she does. The key to saving and investing is tracking your spending and making decisions about where your money goes. That’s how you get your money to work harder and take you to millionaire status.
Here are three things that every millionaire has in their budget.
- Millionaires Prioritize Saving
Savings should be a priority, not an afterthought. Millionaires tend to live a debt free life, thus financial goals are accomplished by saving for them…not borrowing money for them.
Personally, the savings line item is currently the largest in my budget. One of my biggest goals is to pay off my home mortgage. So every bit of money that I can save, above my investments & living expenses, goes toward this goal. For you, it could be saving to build an emergency fund, or for a special trip. Whatever the case, having a goal makes saving much easier. Being able to see yourself move closer and closer toward accomplishing a goal is the best motivator of all.
- Millionaires Invest
As a wise woman once said, save early and often. Investments are the top way to build wealth and are accounted for in every millionaire’s budget. Once you achieve a certain level of wealth, the goal is not to get comfortable and plateau. Millionaires continue to look for ways to increase their wealth and expand their impact.
- Millionaires Budget for Travel
Travel tends to be the favorite splurge item of the millionaire. While the path to wealth will include low-spending in order to achieve your goals, it should also include spending on the things that you value. The things that make you happy. You’re in it for the long-haul and must enjoy yourself along the way. Travel is just one way to do this.
Everyone has what it takes to become a self-made millionaire, with the right guidance, tools, and discipline. Millionaires also need to budget and the top things they budget for are: savings, investments, and travel.
